Pleasures of Viewing

• Emotional Pleasures - Significant when a film generated a strong emotional response. This response doesn’t refer to negative emotions, however laughter too.  (My sisters keeper, The lovely Bones, The hangover, Bridesmaids)
• Visceral pleasures  -  Defined by how the films construction elicits a physical effect upon its audience. This can be a feeling of revulsion, kinetic speed, or a ‘roller coaster ride’ (saw, final destination, chainsaw massacre)
• Intellectual puzzles - Certain films offer pleasure in trying to unravel a mystery or puzzle. Scream, although primarily a horror film, also draws upon conventions of the whodunnit (suspects, motives, clues). Pleasure is derived from deciphering the plot and forecasting the end or being surprised by the unexpected. (inception, the others, 6th sense)
